This five-week foundational series will help you build the strength needed to work into a number of inversion postures (arm balances), moving from the ground up. The classes will be taught in the Vinyasa power flow style, aimed at warming the muscles and the mind. Each week, we will build on strength and exercises practiced in previous classes. This will help yogis to channel their strength and stability into getting upside down.
Class Descriptions;
The Cultivating Strength: Inversion Foundations series is designed to provide yogis with the opportunity to work towards challenging inversion postures safely. The series will work to combine strength, alignment, and focus to allow yogis to get upside down more easily.
Grounding Foundations, Week #1 – May 2
Our first class will focus on cultivating heat and strength through a grounding power flow. The class will
revolve around a number of hip and shoulder openers and will end with a workshop on low-to-the-
ground inversions, including eight-angle pose, and its variations, and a toe hold inversion. The
progression of the inversion series aims to provide yogis with a strong foundation to work toward
higher-off-the-ground inversions as they are ready.
Twist and Open, Week #2 – May 9
The second class will build off the strength built during the first class and will focus on twisting. Twisting
is a highly beneficial exercise for diet and digestive health. This flow will warm our core as we move into
a workshop on baby crow, crow, and side crow. Variations and options are a very important aspect of
this class, providing yogis with a “choose-your-own-adventure” aspect that makes even challenging
postures more accessible.
Alignment and Strength, Week #3 – May 16
Our third class will focus on spinal alignment through the activation of our core. The flow aspect of this
class will incorporate balancing postures, like halfmoon, and will work to ensure that our core is ready to
support us during the inversion workshop. The inversion workshop part of class will focus on
headstands, with a number of options available to allow yogis to explore their bodies and balance abilities. Tripod headstand and traditional headstand will be our foundational inversion postures, with an opportunity to work into a number of leg variations in each.
Trust and Control, Week #4 – May 23
Class four will bring our three strength sessions together and will offer yogis an opportunity to get off the ground and fly. Our flow will focus on building arm strength, while opening up through the chest and shoulders. We will cultivate trust and focus throughout, as we move toward the inversion workshop.
Forearm stand, or Pincha Mayurasana, will be the peak posture for class, with an option to work into chin stand. This class will challenge the progress of the last three classes and bring our learnings together. Again, this class is designed for all yoga levels, and options will be provided to build towards these postures.
Breath and Focus, Week #5 – May 30
Breath will be the central focus of our final class as we move through a number of challenging postures and transitions. Yogis will be able to practice postures from the last four classes during the flow, with “level-up” options to see real growth throughout the series. Our final inversion workshop will focus on handstands, a difficult posture, but one that brings many benefits. We will move through a wrist and shoulder warm up previous to moving into the full posture, with demonstrations during handstand playtime.
All levels welcome. Perfect for those who are just starting out or who have been practicing for years.
